As a tropical storm beats down on an island in the Philippines, two sisters leave work and never make it taneously a murder-mystery and an exposè of endemic corruption today, Give Up Tomorrow looks intimately at the case of Paco Larrañaga, a student accused of killing two sisters on the provincial island of Cebu. In a way that is both specific to the country and disquietingly universal, the film exposes a Kafkaesque extravaganza populated by flamboyantly crooked public officials, cops on the take, and a frenzied legal and media circus. Give Up Tomorrow is also an intimate family drama focused on the near mythic struggle of two angry, sorrowful mothers who have dedicated more than a decade to executing or saving one young man. Their irreconcilable versions of justice play out in a controversial case, dubbed "The Trial of the Century", that ends a country's use of capital punishment, yet fails to free an innocent Up Tomorrow is an Emmy® Award nominated documentary for Outstanding Inv.
GIVE UP TOMORROW.
The harrowing story of Paco Larrañaga, a young man falsely accused of the murder of two Chinese-Filipino girls. Despite being surrounded by dozens of witnesses, Paco is taken into custody and faced with the possibility of a death sentence. A nationwide media frenzy descends upon his imprisonment, and even though he was on Manila island hundreds of miles away from the murders, Paco is blamed. Coming from a traditional powerful race and caste of Filipino society, Paco plays the much sought-after role of villain. With two groups of class and race profiled as victims and perpetrators and the media speculating on print daily, the case sees an unprecedented amount of extra-judicial attention. No matter how hard Paco fights, and how the victims' families fight, the media circus will not back down and the country is gripped. In a mix of journalism and back-door politics, Give Up Tomorrow examines the corrupt and unimaginable Filipino legislative system. Paco's landmark case may have changed the laws on capital punis.
Give Up Tomorrow tells the story of Paco Larrañaga, who was sentenced to death at age 19 for the alleged kidnapping of two sisters in a sensational mistrial in the Philippines in 1998. Charting the ordeal of Paco’s ten years in prison, the film is a moving and poetic investigative documentary that reveals the human cost of endemic corruption in a country still recovering from years of colonial rule and the democratic instability of the Marcos era..
